Hang It Up

I tried to call you but there was static on the line,
like the crinkle of dead leaves under foot,
the crack of dead branches snapped by relentless hands.
A broken connection, a broken moment.
The receiver mocked me with whines and screeches,
looked up at me from my shaking hand and grinned an evil grin.
“No one lives here anymore;
no one who wants to talk with you, that’s for sure”.
Hang it up, drop it in the dirt,
it matters not for all that remains is the decay of memories.
